Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy supports children to build the skills they need to take part in everyday activities with confidence and independence. This might include learning to play with others, focus and participate in the classroom, develop friendships, manage big feelings, explore new foods, or become more independent in daily routines like dressing, toileting, and mealtimes. Therapy focuses on the core occupations of childhood; play, learning, social connection, and self-care, helping children engage in the moments that matter most to them and their families.

Child Occupational Therapy Sans Souci FAQs

1. What is occupational therapy for children?

Occupational therapy helps children build the skills they need to take part in everyday activities with confidence and independence. This might include learning to play with others, focusing and participating in the classroom, developing friendships, managing big feelings, exploring new foods, or becoming more independent with dressing, toileting and mealtimes. Therapy focuses on the core occupations of childhood: play, learning, social connection and self-care.

2. What areas can your occupational therapists support?

Our occupational therapists support fine motor skills, gross motor skills, and participation in school and community life. They also provide functional capacity assessments and support self-care skills and play skills.

3. What are fine motor skills, and why do they matter?

Fine motor skills involve coordinating the small muscles in the hands to hold, explore and manipulate objects such as toys, pencils and feeding utensils. They are important for school readiness goals such as drawing, cutting and handwriting.

4. What are gross motor skills?

Gross motor skills use the large muscle groups for movements such as running, jumping, walking, kicking and throwing.

5. What is a functional capacity assessment?

A functional capacity assessment helps us get to know your child and how they take part in everyday life. We then provide a detailed report to support NDIS planning, covering your child’s strengths, support needs and recommendations for further support.

6. How can occupational therapy help with self-care and play skills?

Self-care skills include dressing, eating, toileting and personal hygiene, and some children need extra support because of motor challenges, sensory sensitivities or developmental differences. For children who find play challenging, therapy offers guided support to build confidence, strengthen peer interactions and develop the foundational skills needed for meaningful engagement and enjoyment.

7. Do you accept NDIS or Medicare?

NDIS-funded services are available under Early Childhood Supports and Therapeutic Supports – Capacity Building, for self-managed and plan-managed families. Medicare 135 is available for children diagnosed with complex neurodevelopmental disorders. Services delivered by Allied Health Assistants can be claimed through the NDIS, but not through private health or Medicare.

Self care skills

These skills include tasks such as dressing, eating, toileting, and personal hygiene, which are important for managing everyday routines at home, school, and in the community. Some children may need additional support to develop these abilities, whether due to motor challenges, sensory sensitivities, or developmental differences

Play skills

Play supports the development of creativity, problem-solving, communication and social connection. Pretend play, such as role playing or using objects in imaginative ways, helps children make sense of the world and engage with others. As children move toward cooperative play, they begin to practise important skills like turn taking, teamwork and building friendships. For children who find play challenging, therapy can offer guided support to build confidence, strengthen peer interactions and develop the foundational skills needed for meaningful engagement and enjoyment.
